Editing by North Star

Jennifer Huder – Editor
Copyediting for fiction, nonfiction (biography, travel, memoir, nature), narrative nonfiction, creative nonfiction, and short story collections
Discover how working with a copyeditor can help you achieve your goal!
- Clarity: A second set of eyes on your manuscript can reveal troublesome or rough sentences or transitions. Together, we can clarify your intentions, examine the readers perspective, close gaps, and ensure consistency throughout.
- Accuracy: Using Chicago Manual of Style 18th Edition, Merriam-Webster Collegiate Dictionary, and a host of other relevant tools and resources, we will sweep through style, grammatical issues, usage, and some punctuation/spelling, names, and as needed, citations. Using track changes with query boxes makes it easy to stay well organized in editing both short and long manuscripts and to communicate back and forth with ease. An initial clean up of errant spelling, numeration, punctuation misses will be provided.
- Confidence: Having an editor to work with is helpful for discussing text, flow, tone, pace, revisions and offers solutions for you to consider. My goal is your success!
Pro Tip: The most frequent issues that colleagues and I find are: overlooked or overused punctuation, misspellings, incorrect usage, and tiny details that need confirmation – names, titles, locations, dates, chronology, and captions/credits for images/tables used.
What makes a good fit for you? Who should you trust with your manuscript?
Working together ensures that you stay in full control of your manuscript, you achieve your intentions clearly, and you are completely satisfied with your final manuscript.
Timelines matter. My focus on offering excellent service with accuracy, comprehensive review, thoughtful and researched (as needed) comments makes the difference. I’ll work diligently to complete my first pass, send over easy-to-follow notes, review your responses, discuss as needed, and allow time for your reply. The pace of the project is determined by length of manuscript, density of ancillary materials, your availability, and adequate time to discuss changes as needed.
Want to know more? Let’s connect! Start now by sending an email sharing a bit about your project, your timeline, and we will set up a brief conversation to determine if we will work well together to meet your goals.

About the Editor
Jennifer Huder
I enrolled in the Professional Certification in Editing program with University Chicago (UChicago-Professional – Graham School) and I will complete this exciting program in Spring, 2026. This experience refreshed decades of writing in different styles, for various audiences and editing with electronic editing tools, integration of Chicago Manual of Style as my style guide into my daily work (instead of the anxiety-producing drum roll in my head as I searched this resource when all else came up empty- handed) and current editing issues. Bonus is all of the workshops this program has offered alongside coursework that stay on the cutting edge of editing.
AI is a big part of this conversation. AI should not write for you. It’s a tremendous resource for specifics to aid in editing, researching, and tuning, but AI programs choose the “next best” answer and it’s not your voice, your imagination, your thoughts, your interpretation of your research. Steer clear of the temptation and avoid the chance of open access to your work , which can occur without your name attached.
I am a copyeditor who works with writers where they are and with what the goals are for your manuscript. I am a writer who likes to work with writers. I have previous experience in AP, APA, MLA, and recent experience in CMOS 18. I am a collaborator and have a talent for really diving in to what’s presented as finished, hearing the writers voice, and helping writers bring forward their best to achieve their goals.
I have a BA from Michigan State University from the James Madison College in International Relations. I have over twenty years of experience writing and editing marketing and public relations materials, features articles, and corporate communications. I am an accredited journalist by PR NEWSWIRE (now Cision), I have edited materials and coached writers for several years.
I founded and serve as founding editor for an independent literary magazine showcasing poetry, short stories, and nature photography. Walloon Writers Review is a regionally focused anthology and is available in bookstores and shops throughout the region. It is intended for general audiences and celebrates the natural beauty and unique experiences of life in northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula.
My recent projects include: a novel, two poetry chapbooks, and a journal-style memoir, along with the literary magazine.
